Philip Wilkinson

Almost fifty years in the security industry

From 1970 I started high school at Abbey Grange CofE High School in Leeds. I graduated with top GCE’s in Physics, Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Technical Drawing and Woodwork. I then embarked on a one year course at Kitson College and earned my YHCFE in electronic and electrical engineering. Moving forward, I discovered motorcycles, beer, camping and even girls. This is the subject of my book, it’s only the dirty ones we don’t want.

In 1976, I was fortunate enough to be awarded an apprenticeship with Chubb Alarms in Leeds. This experience forms the basis of my first volume of captivating tales, aptly titled Alarming Stories. Following the completion of my apprenticeship, I pursued a career as a security engineer and eventually specialized in the field of CCTV, which serves as the focal point of my second volume.

In 1996, I embarked on an entrepreneurial journey by establishing my very own NACOSS approved company. As the technical director, I dedicated my expertise and efforts to this venture until its acquisition in 2001. This period is the subject of my third volume in the Alarming Stories trilogy. Subsequently, I assumed the role of Managing Director for Xtag Ltd. until 2007, during which time I diversified into high-end project management within the orthopaedics industry.

An exciting opportunity arose that enticed me to venture into the world of online security electronic parts distribution. By embracing innovation and disrupting the industry, I established a successful business that continues to thrive to this day. Concurrently, I have also been pursuing my passion for writing, resulting in the publication of four books under my name.

In summary, my journey has taken me from an apprenticeship in Chubb Alarms to becoming a security engineer, transitioning into CCTV expertise, establishing my own company, venturing into project management, and ultimately, running a disruptive online security electronic parts distribution business. Alongside these endeavours, I have also pursued my passion for writing, culminating in the publication of four books.
